Every one of us has a bad eating habit. Either we pick at the food on our plate for eternity or gobble it up without caring to chew on it properly. Then, there is the desire to binge unnecessarily on stuff the body simply doesn’t need. And of course, we cannot forget the king of all bad habits – skipping important meals because we’re just so busy!

It’s time to wage a war on these bad habits and adopt newer and healthier practices. They say old habits die hard but we have to find comfort in the fact that they do die…eventually!

Speed Eating

One of the penalties of living too fast a lifestyle is that it doesn’t give you the time to sit back and enjoy your meal in peace. People are forever wolfing their food down, too bothered to chew it let alone taste it, since they are in such a mad rush to go some place. The downside of this habit is that although you might end up saving a lot of time, you also down too many calories for your own good. The faster you eat, the likelier are you to miss the “I’m full” signs the stomach sends the brain. This, in turn, means you indulge in overeating without knowing it.

So, the moral of the story is, slow down, take your time and chew whatever you are eating thoroughly. Wait for at least ten minutes before asking for another helping or moving on to another course. Place all your focus on what you’re eating and try and enjoy your meals.

Eating on the Go

Yet another unfortunate reaction to the hi-speed life we lead. Eating on the move might be a professional necessity for most people but it makes it really difficult for you to eat healthy. You may be thanking your stars that you are able to cram in at least two meals on the go; but you need to evaluate and see, if what you are eating is wholesome and nutritious.

The best way to break this habit is to stick to the practice of having three regular meals a day with healthy snacks thrown in between them. By eating at a fixed time every day, you train your body and brain to recognize meal times. And, for times when you simply cannot stop and eat a decent meal, carry a packet of nuts or dried fruit with you. You won’t be reaching out for those chocolate bars and crisps then.

Munching Mindlessly

When we sit down to watch a movie or work at the computer, it’s not uncommon for us to carry a bowl of crisps or a packet of biscuits with us. This has absolutely nothing to do with hunger. People do it simply out of force of habit. And in the process pack in way too many calories than what is good for them.

Make it a rule to eat only when you are sitting down at the table. This helps you think about what you are eating and break the habit of unconscious nibbling.
